Authors have a very difficult job to do.
First we must right a novel, then we have to edit the novel. After that we have to approve a cover, write a synopsis (which is harder than you think) and then we have to begin marketing the novel. Then we have to come up with an elevator pitch. (more about this later)We must do all of this BEFORE the book is even out.
Then we must network but that is the hardest part.
You would think networking would be a great thing to do but it is not when you are only networking with other authors.
This is not something you want to do a lot of. Sure you want to network but who is your audience. Other authors? Sometimes. But most of the time, your audience is your readers.
Are you networking with them? Are you going where they are? Are you showing up at an event thrown by a friend, not as the guest but as the "celebrity" making a "guest appearance"?
Sounds corny, right?
But think about it.
You get invited to a Christmas party. You go because you are supporting your friend. Once you get there, find out if there are readers there. How do you do that? Ask? duh! If there are a lot of readers, say about half of the crowd, pull the hostess to the side. Ask them if they wouldn't mind introducing you as an author and allowing you ONE MINUTE of their time to introduce yourself and your novel (elevator pitch) .
Keep it to a minute because the party isn't for you. Even if you don't have a lot of readers in attendance, you may still be able to make a sell because they know someone who loves reading.
Networking with fans is way more important than networking with authors. Why?
Some authors feel you are their competition and although they will be 'happy' for you, they aren't going to buy your novel and spread the word about you if they feel you are taking their potential sales.
Instead, you need to network with people you are trying to reach. After all you wrote a novel for READERS, right?
So get out there and begin networking with READERS. They are you audience and remember use every opportunity to tell at least one person that you are a published author.

LIFE KEEPS INTERRUPTING ME
I have been MIA since May. My goodness where did the time go.
It's already the middle of October and I am not anywhere close to my goal of blogging every single month.
Well, life keeps interrupting me.
Social engagements, sickness and writing has pulled me away. I guess that is a good thing; especially the writing part.
That's not an excuse; its just my reality.
Well at least I haven't been daydreaming or binge watching my favorite "Chicago" themed shows.
So, my novel is finished. It is with the editor.
My business is going very well.
My tiny house is moving forward, at a snails pace, but still moving forward.

DISCRIMINATION IN THE WRITING WORLD
At some point we have all encountered some form of discrimination.
As a writer, sometimes authors of color find themselves fighting discrimination of another kind.
We have our own section in the book store. We have our own section but why? Some authors think this is a good thing but I don't.
My writing should be listed and shelved with every other book in the store. My book shouldn't be singled out because it was written by a black author.
Yet, we aren't shelved with other books. We have to have our own section. This is a form of discrimination. Plain and Simple.
Our books are priced higher than books in the same genre as white authors. Our books are marketed to a specific audience but why does this have to be?
If you write romance, why can't your book be listed with the other romance writers? If you write mysteries, I shouldn't have to go to the 'black' section to find a black author's book. It should be under "Mystery" like all other books.
Not only do we face discrimination in the bookstores but we face it when we are asked to be on panels at writing conferences. Why am I on a panel with all black authors instead of on the panel with authors discussing the writing style of mystery or romances.
Some of us are making great strides in breaking the stereotype. Cerece Renner Murphy, is an african american woman author of Sci-Fi and she is taking that world by storm. In part because there is not a black sci fi section in bookstores and because she puts herself out there as being one of the best woman writers of Sci-Fi.
Make no mistake about it; there are a lot of black authors making a wave in the author world but not enough of them are getting the recognition that they deserve.
Why is this? Because mainstream is not seeing them. Why? because they are shelved in the 'black' section of the book store.
Next time you go into a store; make sure you check out my theory and while you are at it; make sure you check out the price of the books.

HAPPY NEW YEAR....OR IS IT?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Right...because at midnight a new year began and auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind....
But for some; the new year is the same because they suffer from depression.
For some; that countdown means nothing more than more depression, more sadness and more compulsive behaviors. (most people that suffer from depression have some sort of compulsive habit. The reason for this is because they need to be able to feel in control of something)
For some, being depressed is especially hard during the holidays . Most depressives had a horrible 40 days. Yes, that's how many days there are from Thanksgiving and New Year Day.
They smiled their way through parties, dinners, cocktail hours and family gatherings. They laughed, joked, sang and was the 'life of the party.'
Have you ever thought that for some of them; it was an excruciating act that they live through every day? Think for a moment about the person who is the life of the party...how many times have you really seen them out? If it wasn't for an invite that they couldn't turn down. How many times during a month have you seen them look as if the weight of the world is on their shoulders?
(now don't start looking at everyone like they are depressed but I am sure you can think of a few people that just seem like they are having an off day...a lot)
How many of your friends have depression?
You may never know because because statistics show that 4 out of 5 people suffer from depression. So from your job; out of 10 people, 8 of them may suffer from some sort of depression.
Why am I bringing you down on the new year? I am not trying to do that. My goal is to bring attention to something that I suffer with.
I am one of those four. I have close friends who know and who routinely check on me. However, there are people who don't have that.
I want all of us to be mindful of that person who seems withdrawn at times and you never ask them, Are they OK? Do they need someone to talk to?
I want all of us to be mindful that some of our friends, co-workers and acquaintances may need a shoulder at the beginning of this month because for them...
The new year; isn't so happy.

BLOGGING IS NOT HARD....
Some people say that blogging is hard.
I find it pretty easy. That's because I ALWAYS have something to say.
See, I find it very easy to blog; especially if I am upset about something. However, I find it pretty easy to blog about things I observe and things that I learn while being an author.
You don't have to 'give tips" every time you blog. You can simply write about what happened during your day; while writing or not writing.
Write about what has upset you. It's the cheapest therapy I know.
Better yet, write about the struggles of your writing life because a lot of us want to know how you overcame that particular problem.
Last week, I met up with fellow book diva Dee Lawrence and we had an amazing breakfast at Eggspectations. I had the breakfast burrito and after seeing mine, so did she.
We were able to chat and catch up on all that has been happening with us in our private lives and our writing lives.
After a couple of mimosas' we just sat and people watched for a bit before calling it a morning.
We met early and before we knew it; four hours had blown by and we really didn't want to leave but life called and told us we needed to stop relaxing and get back at it.
So we said our goodbyes and inked ourselves in for another breakfast meeting to just catch up.
See, I didn't think I would tell you all that but it's part of the reason I like blogging.
I can say just about anything I want and it relieves me of some stress.
+LadySunshine95 says she doesn't know what to blog about but I tell her; just sit at the computer and you will be AMAZED at what pours out of your mind.
Many people think you have to blog once a day or once a week. But that is not the case. You can blog as often as you need to. I find that blogging once a week helps my mental status. Just don't go to long without a blog or people will forget all about you.

I LOVE MYSELF, DO YOU?
Yes, I heard someone on the radio say that this morning.
Do you love yourself? Some say it is selfish and some say its is being self centered.
What is wrong with that?
We can show love to our children, our friends, family and some co-workers but when it comes to ourselves; we often over look the obvious.
Sometimes you have to take a day to be selfish. Do something you want to do.
Go to the park, by yourself. Enjoy that picnic that you made especially for you. Oh wait, you don't like deviled eggs...doesn't matter. I do!
Go to the movies and see that thriller, romance or comedy that only YOU want to see. Oh wait, you don't want to go. Good, I wasn't going to invite you.
Go out to the bar and treat yourself to a Martini, Red Wine or just sit and listen and watch the people. Oh wait, you don't want to go. Good, wasn't asking you.
See sometimes we NEED to be selfish.
Call off from work. Take a mental day. Yes, those are what those sick days can be used for. What good is your job when you are stressed in it and can't stay home in the bed to rejuvenate yourself.
Pick a day to do this:
1. Sleep late. Turn off your phone, alarms and all other noise making gadgets.
2. Walk around in your pajamas as long as you want to. (or nude depending on your mood)
3. Don't shave, comb your hair or brush your teeth. (Hey, its your day)
4. When you do decide to get dressed, take yourself out for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Your choice and make sure it is to a place you want to go to.
5. Take a selfie of yourself doing something you want to do. (you will want to remember how much fun you had so you can do this next month too)
6. Don't feel guilty
See that last thing is most important. We often feel guilty for doing things for ourselves. DON'T.
We are entitled to it.
We work hard all other days of the month, week and year. Giving yourself one day is not going to hurt anyone.
Imagine if you do this once a month.
Your co-workers, kids, husband/partner and friends will notice a difference in you. Your step will be lighter. Your mood will be high and your energy will be off the charts.
Just try it once. I dare you!
